READING : WHY & HOW

‘Reading maketh a full man….’ Said Francis Bacon in one of his essays called “Studies”. Ever since the beginning of the intellectual civilization being able to decode the printed material and enjoy te mysterious, ever-benefiting world of reading has been fascinating and a major source of intellectualization psychic improvement. Technically reading is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning from written texts. It is a means of language acquisition, of texts comprehension, of communication, and of sharing information and ideas.
 The importance of reading and comprehend the printed world has been indisputable and inevitable too. It is an ever going process that greatly contributes to the development of a comprehensive and wholesome personality of a child by improving the four basic skill in them:
Ø  The oral comprehension
Ø  The written comprehension
Ø  The oral production
Ø  The written production
Reading is an excellent source of acquiring knowledge and entertainment that helps us improve not only reading skill and speed but it changes our general language proficiency and attitude towards reading and language learning also. Now, when we live in a world of printed words, reading becomes much more important for it provides us new ideas, new information, a strong supportive hand to our ideas, and the best kind of aesthetic pleasure and entertainment. Moreover this ability to read, to comprehend texts, to derive pleasure and argument from it, and to be able to reproduce it logically and meaningfully separates up from other animal and makes us men. Reading is a source of great personal and aesthetic pleasure. It helps us reduce our stress and enrich our intellectuality. They also have an ornamental value as they add confidence and oratory skill to one’s personality. Basically if we go on to list why should we read, we can have the following broader points which categorically incorporate the reasons and importance of reading. Reading is important and inevitable because:-
Ø  It helps in increasing our language competence
Ø  It provides a larger platform for learning and acquiring knowledge
Ø  It helps in building a rich diction for readers
Ø  It helps in exploring new worlds and horizon of experience
Ø  It is a process of mental stimulation and improves thinking
Ø  It is good means of stress reduction and entertainment
Ø  It enhances thinking ability and analytical skills
Ø  It develops better writing ability and skills
Ø  It provides abundant aesthetic pleasure, entertainment and tranquility
However, it is also apparently important to realize that one should not read merely to be able to argue and contradict others. Nor should we read books with a mind setup to believe whatever we find there. Nor yet should we read in order to obtain material for conversation or just for the sake of acquiring fuel for the cheap arguments. Rather we should read books in order to ponder over what we read and to judge the value of what the books contain. Very rightly Francis Bacon has opined in one of his essays:
            “Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe ad take for granted, nor to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider.’
And to weigh and consider we must have a practical experience and approach towards the ideas and concepts presented in the text. Without practical approach either we cannot be able to use the knowledge gathered from the reading or we would be very impractical and hypothetical while implementing them. Concisely we should keep the following dos and don’ts in our mind while pursuing serious reading;
Do read to
Ø  Acquire lots of knowledge, and ideas
Ø  Judge the value of the ideas presented in the book
Ø  Enable you for better writing and communication
Ø  Have pleasure and make the best use of your leisure
Ø  Enhance your personality
Ø  Be able to analyze judiciously and logically
Ø  Understand life, people and society in a better way
Ø  Abstain from backbiting & criticizing others
Don’t read to
Ø  Contradict and confute
Ø  Believe everything that we find there
Ø  Obtain chief material just for conversation
Ø  Acquire fuel for the sake of the argument
Now the second and perhaps even more important question is how to read? Of course the question does not refer to the beginners who have just started joining the letters and reading out the test in a broken way as smaller children do. When I say how to read, it refers to the group of mature readers.
To get the best benefit and pleasure of reading one should have a proper plan since the very beginning and one should adhere to the plan consistently too without making any alteration. The very first and the most important thing in this regard is to consider and identify the areas of interests. This is because the printed world is so vast that the ultimate outcome would be almost insignificant if we read randomly selected materials or anything that we come across. Once we have identified the areas of our interests, we should start with an easier text with a low rate of unknown words so that one could get more pleasure as well as perception of ideas and concepts and morals conveyed ad then gradually switch over to more serious books. This process of moving from easier to difficult levels of text would further strengthen our interest and broaden our expertise in that particular area.
The second thing to consider is what process should we follow in order to read the text? There are basically two ways of reading:
Ø  Oral reading i.e. reading out the text vocally and loudly
Ø  Silent reading i.e. reading the text with eyes without making sound
And you will find lots of debate and argument about which process to follow. I am not intending here to make any conclusion and give any verdict about which method should we follow because both the processes mentioned above are having some strengths and some weaknesses and selection may differ from person to person depending upon individual’s habit and likings.
An objective comparison between the two above mentioned processes shows that silent reading is the best way of reading after certain stage. Of course oral reading is good for primary stage as it helps improving pronunciation and clarity of speech, but at a mature level it hinders the comprehension of text as the co-ordination between mind and reading orally does not remain in proper tune. Moreover presence of sounds often disturbs the concentration and disrupts comprehension.
On the other hand silent reading is multi-process step involving, recognition and interpretation of text, awareness of structure, and speed of reading. In silent reading readers can develop a perfect tuning between eyes and mind without hindrance as readers are quite unaware of their eye movement. Mind remains absorbed with th meaning of the text without realizing that eyes constantly move and pause. Absence of sound further helps us in concentrating more on comprehending the text mentally. In a nutshell, it can be said that longer concentrated period of silent reading build vocabulary, increase structural awareness, improve comprehension skill and promote confidence, positive attitude and motivation for further reading.
One more problem which disturbs and distracts us from reading is meeting unknown and difficult words which should be considered properly and solution should be included in the strategy that we might develop at the beginning of our serious reading. A reader can opt many ways to deal with this problem. Some possible solution could be one of the following:
Ø  Every time referring dictionary while reading
Ø  Leaving out the words and concluding the meaning by assumption
Ø  Reading on and coming back to dictionary
Referring dictionary every time we meet a difficult word breaks the concentration and the sequence of interpretations which ultimately lead up to the lack of interests and de-motivate us. Leaving out and assuming are not at all good as it misleads out interpretation and also deprives up from vocabulary enhancement. Therefore among all these, the way of reading on and coming back to dictionary appears to be the best from my point of view. So while reading one should keep a pencil and a paper in hand to note down the words and later on refer dictionary. The other faster option is just to underline the words in the text itself and refer to dictionary later on. However this option may not be suitable to a reader who loves keeping the books neat and clean.
So in this way, I hope, we can have the best possible pleasure and benefit of reading and also we can improve our knowledge and intellectuality.

MY ADORABLE DARLING

My Adorable Darling,
Whenever I feel sad,
I look towards you,and
There I find my happiness;
Whenever I feel depressed and dejected,
I look eagerly towards you, and
There I find my comfort and solace;
Whenever I feel tortured and week,
I look hopefully towards you, and
There I find my inexhaustible strength;
Whenever I lose my faith in myself,
I look tenderly towards you, and
There I find my strong confidence;
Whenever I feel vanquished in life,
I look expectantly towards you, and
There I find my energy to sail through;
whenever I feel unsafe and insecure,
I look simply towards you, and
There I find my safe refuse;
Whenever i run short of self esteem,
I look towards you, and
There I find my energy umpteen;
Whenever I feel spent and lonely,
I look towards you, and
I find my beloved companion;
So my Adorable Darling,
My imagination, my poems unseen,
Never be unkind and harsh to me,
Because you are my happiness,
My comfort, my solace, my strength,
My refuse, my faith, my confidence,
And above all,
You are my worship divine.

IMAGINE AND ENJOY

Imagination technically means the process of creating pictures and visualizing things in the imaginary world of thought and mental perception. Of course the visualization and the creation are not physically real, nor it could be, and moreover, at times, it tends to lead one astray from the  course of life for the time being or sometimes even permanently; can lead to abnormality if practiced wildly and without proper handling; can take a person away from the reality and the real world around, but still it has its own charm, pleasure and soothing effects upon the person involved in it, provided the person involved knows how to take on the course of imagination how to create and enjoy this fascinating and charming world of imagination. It may appear funny and childish to look upon the process and the world of imagination in such a fantastic and positive way, and to many, it may appear even as a thought of a lunatic or mentally sick person, and to some extent, they would be right too to think so, but from my point of view imagination can create a wonder to everybody – it can turn a simple but sound and normal person into a great personality; it serve as the most perfect asylum and refuse for the tortured soul, frustrated beings, lonely lovers and all who are not at ease with the normal course of life which is often not matching with their taste and demands. It creates the best and the most shining wonder with a mentality-strong-and-intellectually-sound-but-hungry and can turn the same into a strong power house of valuable and eternal thoughts and lofty ideas in the proper course of time. It can very well sooth the aching and bleeding hearts and can change the hellish course of suffering into a course of blissful internal and mental enjoyment.
This world is full of wonders of imagination. In other words we can say that whatever changes and adventures we notice around are the fruits of imagination only. Great poets and writers and novelists and dramatists became great because they mastered the art of creating and visualizing the world of imagination; great scientists became great because they could explore this fascinating world of imagination and could come up with certain eternal and precious conclusions of their thoughts and imagination. Great philosophers became great because they could brood over their imaginary thoughts and could visualize the state of human beings and society in certain ideal states.
Thus it can confidently and clearly be said that imagination and its fanciful world is of immense importance. If we can analyse the process, implication, and outcome of imagination we can clearly see what an amazing world it is and what amazing wonders it can do. But this of course forbidden apple for those who are still quite near to beastliness (of course the definition of beastliness from my point of view is quite different here from what the common people think) and enjoy living only by whiling away their time simply by eating, sleeping and gossiping. To really enjoy and be handsomely profited by this process and the world of imagination one should have a very strong mind with immense power of thinking and creation. One should have those keen eyes, which are capable of visualizing this imaginary world of imagination. This world is a world where we don’t need our eyes to be physically opened. Rather this is the world, which demands the ability to see things with our close eyes. But again we should always remain reminded of the fact that this world is not a dream, world where our mind work in a state of mental sub-consciousness and we enjoy everything by physically sleeping and subconsciously exploring the world of dream in which generally we fulfill and satisfy our unfulfilled desires. On the contrary in this world of imagination, though we enjoy it with close eyes only, our minds work actively and work as if it is a camera which can create real pictures on our mental screens and create the complete world of our choices as if it is real. Besides strong and creative mind the most important thing needed to enjoy and explore this fanciful world is the art of imagination. We compulsorily need a sound mastery over this art of imagination. Minus this art of imagination there is no way at all to have the real enjoyment. Moreover one is sure to be in a graver problem without having the required mastery over this art of imagination. And the fact that it is not easy to acquire the required mastery over this art complicates the whole issue. But, though it is difficult and time taking to achieve the desired mastery over this art, this is not at all impossible at the same time. If we train ourselves, or to say, our minds with patience and positive attitude, we can always achieve the desired and required mastery over this art. And once we acquire the considerable command over this art, everything will change drastically and dramatically. There will be no more silent mental suffering, no more loneliness, and no more of any such mental torture, we can easily transport our own selves in the world of our own choices and dreams; we can easily take ourselves to the world of eternal bliss and heavenly enjoyment with our above mentioned mastery over this art of imagination. Rest of the unwanted world and surrounding around us would no more exist. Everything out of imaginary but desired and loved world of imagination would cease. We can be all alone in the world and with the objects and persons of our own liking and tastes in this world of imagination. Nothing can distract us from the enjoyment we want to have in this world of imagination. We can enjoy anything we like and we can be happy and blissful anywhere and everywhere and in any state of our mind. Then being alone or being away from someone near and dear won’t matter at all because we can always fly over the wings of our imagination and be anywhere or with anybody we like, love and long for. One might call it craziness or even foolishness and I won’t mind at all because I know that they don’t know how to enjoy this fanciful world; because they have never tasted the nectar of imagination; because they must be the people either too dry sentimentally who don’t care for such delicate things or live only in a materialistic world where every happiness depends on money.
Whatever may be the case, certainly it is a panacea for those who live, or to say, are forced to live in a lonely world. It’s a life saving world, process and substance for those who are under compulsion to live in depression or some kind of other… caused by certain unavoidable circumstances; for those who have suffered a severe sentimental crisis; for those who are compelled to live in a way which is completely different from how they actually want and with people who don’t match their taste and likings.
Life is not always happy. It’s not always sweet and charming. It’s strange and peculiar in its own way. It is guided by so many factors. But the tragedy is that the factors, which guide our lives, are more concerned about the welfare of the external world and least about the welfare and happiness of an individual upon which they very existence of any society depends. These guiding factors, in a way, create more hindrances rather than any help for the happiness of human beings. Moreover it brings so-called order in the society at the cost of individuals, their dreams, and their happiness. Every moment we have to do certain unwanted compromises or other to adjust ourselves in this demanding situation at the cost of all the personal choices and likings, which ultimately leads to so many problems in our lives in the times ahead. And here comes the vital and important need of imagination. Though it is just imagination, and at times it can even be baseless and illusory, it provides enough substances and helps us in order to cop up with life, circumstance and situations which are otherwise very difficult to cop up with.

Once again I enjoyed the gift of imagination, once again I travelled on the wings of imagination, and reached wherever I wanted to reach, met whoever I wanted to meet, and did whatever I wanted to do. And this I did not do just for a moment or few moments but I did all theses as long as I wanted and to be very particular I have been doing all these for the last three-four days and nights and really, believe me, really it was all throughout enjoyment and excitement and pleasure only. From my point of view, this is not only a very good time-pass but also a very good companion of loneliness, a very good and effective medicine for the tension caused by loneliness. Blessed are those who have this divine gift of imagination power and I feel myself to be fortunate enough at least in this regard as I can really re-live any moment or day or my past life- whether happy or sad or adventurous or exciting- or I can really create the imaginative pictures of future staying wherever I like, with whoever I love and like and do whatever I want to do, and do how long I want to do. Those without this divine gift of power of imagination are left with no option other than to cry over their sad past, or for the happy moments people often want to continue forever or to worry about their future. What if all these are not real, not physical; what if all these are imagination only; what if all these are mere fantasy, still it is fantastic, adventurous and very, very enjoyable and moreover is a situation when people are in no position to make it all happen in reality by any means. In the present scenario, when I am totally cut off from everything I want, and when I am away from everybody I love, this power of imagination is a real boon; this is the only ray of light in the entire horizon of darkness. Whenever I feel lonely, sad and depressed I just cut off myself from the immediate surrounding, close my eyes; concentrate myself, fly over the wings of imagination and Lo! There is an entirely new world and in this world of fantasy there is everybody I want to meet, love and live with; there is every place of my dream I want to visit; there is every scene I want to enjoy; there is the very ideal atmosphere to do everything I want to do. Who cares whether it is real or not as long as it brings some pleasure, some fun, some happiness some excitement; as long as it console the aching heart; as long as it creates the fascinating pictures in our mind; as long as it provides enjoyment; as long as it lets us enjoy our dream world; as long as it lets us embrace everyone we long for; as long as it lets us do everything we desire to. Of course we cannot deny the importance and excitement of physical aspects of all these but it is not always possible to have all these things physically. It’s not always possible to reach everywhere we want; its not always possible to meet everybody we love and long for; it’s not always possible to do everything we desire and when we realize this inability and impossibility then only the importance of imaginary actions and imaginary visualization become very important, almost incalculable, incomparable, indispensable, and irreplaceable. It’s like an oasis in the desert of desire when people suffer from depression, loneliness, and other such sentimental crisis. So if you can, if you are able to imagine, if you are capable of visualizing pictures in your mind then My Dear, try it and enjoy  and live wherever you like and whoever you like and want to be with, do whatever you desire in your world of imagination and then you will the difference it make in your life and days ahead; and then you will realize the changes it make s in your attitude to look at things and analyse the situations; then you will see how much it can reduce the pain and sufferings; then you will know how much energy and enthusiasm it brings in your life; then you will find how much positivity it brings to your approach. You will find a drastic change in everything around; in all the aspects of your life, and the whole scenario, the whole perception, the whole outlook will change.

Quality Education – the Debate is always on.....

Education civilizes; education equips; education enables; education guides; and above all education empowers. History is evident of the fact that the societies that lagged in educating their masses were also left behind in their race of socio-economic development and moral enrichment. We don’t need to go anywhere else. Just refer to our own history and we will get the point I am referring here. Just compare the state of education before the starting of the modern Education System with the state of education after the implementation of the modern system. Earlier we were totally cut off from the world not knowing what was happening out of our country. After the implementation of the modern education system we are better off to the modern world.

However, recently people have started talking about quality of education is going on all around and the community of teachers are blamed for bringing down the quality of education. Now we, the teachers, are blamed by every Tom Jack and Zill for bringing down the quality in Education. Sadly but infamously we have earned the tag of being responsible for losing the quality in our education system and product.

This scenario is like a double edged sword as it reminds me about the responsibility that very soon I am going to yoke as a teacher on one hand and the sadistic and poor attitude of the people-other-than-teachers towards the community of teachers. And as a future teacher I feel like getting cuts all over my mind and psyche from this double edged sword.

When I ponder over the issue of quality education surprisingly I fail to understand why ‘Education’ which is meant and supposed to develop all the desired moral values and qualities in human beings has lost its own ‘quality’ in our context. Nowadays “Quality Education” has become the commonest topic of debate all around. No matter whether we are sitting in our drawing room or in a public informal gathering; whether we are having a formal meeting or informal discussion; whether we are enjoying a cup of tea in front of a street tea-stall or enjoying the luxurious meal in an elite-class hotel we can see people grossly engrossed in discussion over this topic. We also see this debate intensively going on in print and audio-visual media. This debate has metamorphosed itself into a street slogan and I am apprehensive that this may lead to demean the respectful place of teachers in society hence the need of the time is to understand the concept and philosophy of “Quality Education” in its real sense.

At this point it’s quite obvious that we seriously ask few questions to ourselves. What is “Quality Education”? What could be some of the parameters that guarantee this “Quality Education”? What is role of teachers in ensuring quality education? And also how far are the society and family responsible for this downfall in the quality of education? Until and unless we understand all these aspects about quality education we cannot claim authoritatively that we have understood the concept clearly.

The importance of education is best explained by the Chinese proverb that says: "If you want to think of one year ahead, plant rice, if you want to think of 10 years ahead, plant trees, but if you want to think of 100 years ahead, give education to people." This clearly signifies the fact that education equips people for future. But then education does not only mean mere accumulation of facts and information by the learner. Rather, the real education means the process that develops human being with all the moral and ethical values and human touch to face the challenges of the world. And there could no denying to the fact that much of this value and moral learning is ensured by the family and the society at large and we the teachers have not so much to do in this regard. Unfortunately guided by the strong materialistic thoughts the modern education system is slowly getting detached from all these requisites. An objective and careful observation of our society and surrounding shows that modern education system is creating professionals such as doctors, engineers, lawyers & etc. bent on scaling economic achievements rather than producing a sensible human being and responsible citizen enriched with high ethics and rich moral values. In other words modern system and approach to education is producing money-monsters ready to do anything – moral or immoral – to grab more and more and more. There seems no saturation point for this greed of accumulating wealth. Our modern Education System equips us only with information – a lot of information –without adding any fragrance and touch of morality, honesty, sensibility, responsibility and humanity and civic sense in our children. Western world, after chasing and pursuing this information oriented system of education for a long time, has realized this harsh but ultimate reality and is now trying to incorporate those eastern elements in their system that we have been discarding slowly but ruthlessly.

The profession of teaching was respected very highly in the society and people used to opt this profession by choice. The factor of wealth-making was not so prominent then. But in our obsessive journey from our ancient-hood to modernity we have become more materialistic and money oriented rather than being value and moral oriented. As of now the job of teaching in our country is not a preferred option; rather it’s a Hobson’s choice for most of the aspirants. The government and the society have to think why it’s like that and address the issue sooner than later.

At this juncture, while considering about the role of teachers for ensuring the quality in education I find myself at a crossroad and confused about whether to follow the value-rich-ethic-oriented ancient system of education or money-oriented modern system of education. I would like to draw the attention of all the stake holders of our society in the process of education – the learner, the teacher, the parents, and the government officials - towards the realization that we need to develop a perfect balance and equilibrium between the ancient and modern system of education where modern education system creates a perfect blend with traditional values and ethics of our glorious past. I hope by doing this once again we can achieve our ancient glory of being the “respect-worthy teachers”.
In the modern sense “Quality Education” could be explained as the system that enables the majority of the learners to meet the expectation of the "Minimum Level of Learning". It means stimulating creative thinking and developing problem-solving skills among the learners. To achieve this we need to focus on developing few basic things in the right proportion so that we can ensure quality in our education system.
The first and foremost thing in this regard is to realise the fact that the education of our children is the primary responsibility all – the teachers, the parents, and the government. And hence only teachers cannot be blamed for the degradation in the quality of education. The parents and the government cannot wash their hands off it. Ours is a welfare state and education is free her but that does not mean that parents have no role in it. The present scenario is that parents admit their children in schools and think that their responsibility is over. This has to change and parents need to involve themselves in the process of educating their children. They need to give some of their personal time to their children. They need to tell their sons and daughters that before making them a doctor, an engineer, or an officer they desire to make them a good human being and a responsible citizen with high moral values and character. They should start appreciating these qualities in them rather than always digging their marks and possible perks of their future job.
The second most important factor to ensure quality of education is the attitude and the level of commitment of teachers. It’s not only the degrees that they possess or the knowledge of a teacher that makes a good teacher; rather it’s the attitude of the teacher that makes him/her a good teacher. In fact a teacher with positive attitude and higher commitment but with comparatively low content level is a much better teacher than the one who possesses high qualification and rich content but wears a low commitment and poor attitude. Teachers with poor attitudes are like contagious disease in the system that infects the other colleagues as well as the young children whom they teach and hence it’s highly recommendable that this aspect of measuring the attitude and commitment is taken into strict consideration while selecting people for this noble job.
The third most important factor to ensure quality education relates to the system and the government. In order to ensure quality, the system and the government need to focus on human resource management. The government need to put extra attention, efforts and focus on teacher resource management. Recently we see that many teachers have left the profession and opted some other jobs. Why is it so? The government must find out why.
However I personally feel that besides empowering them professionally, intellectually and financially the government also need to define and ensure accountability for them. A balanced system of reward & punishment must be created so that the right one be rewarded and the wrong one be punished. The government and our respectable politicians-in-power have to think and find out why people do not choose the job of teaching by choice; why it has a become a job of compulsion; why people join teaching when they are left with no other option? Until and unless they do so the situation will remain like the “GODS are in Heaven and everything is well on Earth”.
To ensure quality the education must be released from the stranglehold of the red-tapism and the control should come in the hands of ‘Eduationists-turned into Administrators’ rather than in the hands of dry Administrators or ‘Admistrators-turned-into-Educationists’ because only the real educationists can understand the real problem and find the best possible solution.
In conclusion we can say that the community, the parents, the learners, the government and above all the teachers must take keen interest if at all we want to ensure “Quality” in the education of our children. Education is the foundation upon which we have to build our society. All other developments depend upon the development in the field of education. It has to be our first and foremost social priority. So let’s put our hands together and take a pledge that we all will leave no stone unturned to ensure that our children get the best possible education endowed with all the desired qualities and standards. Let’s hope that the government and the people-in-power- political as well as administrative - realise the importance of education and teachers and give them their due.  Let’s strive hard to allow this wisdom to prevail; let’s hope that ultimately this wisdom prevails.
